From KidzBop to Kindie Rock

by Kenny Curtis

Regardless of who wins this year’s Grammy Award for Best Musical Album for Children, it won’t surprise me if their acceptance begins with thanking the cast of High School Musical, Jack Johnson, The Laurie Berkner Band or Kidz Bop… Sales of “Kids Music” has jumped an eye-popping 60% this year, and at one point, the aforementioned held the top 3 spots on the Billboard chart. (Laurie Berkner not withstanding – she topped the list of Best-selling Music DVD’s.) Suddenly, there’s an interest in original Kids Music, and it’s not about trying to clone The Wiggles anymore…

This year’s Grammy nominations in the Kids Music category are a pleasant surprise. The Indies rule! Trout Fishing in America received their second nomination this year, and Dan Zanes finally got a long over-due nod for his CD Catch That Train. John Lithgow’s Sunny Side of the Street is delightfully nostalgic and humorist/songwriter/producer Richard Pearlmutter gets another shot at a statue for the latest CD in the Beethoven’s Wig saga. (The first CD in this series is far and away my favorite, but it’s great that both follow-up CD’s were recognized…. Hey, the Grammy voters may be late to the party, but I’m just happy they came!) The Baby Einstein music is always top-notch, and “Meet the Orchestra” definitely consistent with their standards, but there’s nothing hugely inventive about this one to me… I’m pulling for the indies.
